Beach Beauty for Vanidades
I think it’s natural for a Los Angeles beauty photographer to be drawn to the surroundings of southern California, and the pull is even stronger for Hawaii kids like us. The shores of Malibu, Long Beach, Laguna, and beyond call to us and inspire our art whether rain or shine. While there are many perks to shooting in studio, man-made backdrops & lighting setups have a hard time contending with the sky, sand, palm trees and natural sunlight. Can the cold winter wind and noon-day light be difficult to manage? Sometimes. But it’s oh so worth it on days like this one.
The concept took shape as soon as we settled on a beach location. We looked for a pair of models who would easily communicate life along the shore as well as a sense of closeness. Sydney and Sakura happened to be at the same agency and we were thrilled when we saw them in the casting package. Their faces seemed to share a sort of familiarity that was unique and unexpected. We worked with Sakura years ago in Hawaii, so we knew she was at home in the ocean mist. When we found out that Sydney was from Puerto Rico, casting was complete. Not only do the girls look beautiful together, but they are both islanders, just like the characters we envisioned.
The individual photos of the girls are absolutely beautiful. But, magic happened when we brought them together. While shooting, we experienced a palpable connection and soulfulness in their eyes that casting directors search for and every photographer rejoices in. They moved like a synchronized dance with expressions changing in unison. It was incredible to witness. We couldn’t be happier with the images or the final publication in Vanidades US.
Special thanks to Sydney, Sakura, Debbie, and Opus Beauty.
